30 Days of Photographs III: Autumn

Day 28 of 30 Days of Photographs III. We survived Kafkaesque, it's all downhill from here. Have a drink, it's on me.

Autumn

When we started this challenge there were still green leaves on the trees. Not a lot, mind you, but some. Oh how quickly it changes... I love autumn. I love the rain, the dark, candles and chilly mornings when the world smells like the end of an era. Autumn for me means a lot of difficult memories. It also means the end of summer, the death of something warm and friendly and alive. But at the same time, as the world is dying, preparing for a long and cold winter, autumn means a new start. Never is the world as colourful. Never as vibrant. As the days grow shorter, the nights grow longer; and in the night, I am at home.

I was hoping to get to enjoy autumn for a while longer, but just as life gives way to death, autumn gives way to winter. Big wet snow flakes started falling, sticking to my eyelashes and my hair. So very pure and innocent. A fresh start. I turned my eyes skyward, trying to watch it fall. But the cold got into my eyes, made me blink and miss the moment. I don't think you're supposed to see falling snow. It's too pure for our world. On the ground snow is like the rest of us. Dirty. Going nowhere. But in the air... it's free and new and capable of greatness.

But alas, it falls...

This snow will melt away. It's only October, after all. Autumn is still here, and I will still enjoy it. But winter is coming. Soon.

  1. That's not Autumn, it's Winter.Nice shot for WINTER though...the glowing lighting particularly makes it Narniaesque.

  2. It's clearly autumn snow, not winter snow. You need new glasses, Mo.

"On the ground, snow is like the rest of us. Dirty. Going nowhere."

I can't say anything better than that. I have never said anything better than that.

Both your post and photograph are beautiful, Ziva. Now please send me a reindeer skin. I'm freezing cold.

  4. Oh hush, you silly man, you say things better than that even when you're talking about a sandwich and a coke. You are the master of words.

But thank you nevertheless, your reindeer skin is in the mail.

  5. "There is no season in all the year so beautiful, so radiant with glory, as the early autumn. There is no time when the human soul drinks in so fully the glory and beauty of nature. All objects of beauty are more beautiful while passing away from us. The closing up of a beautiful life—the fading of the holy stars in the dim light of morning—the ending of a quiet summer day and the passing away of the bright summer glory, are all more sweet and lovely as they are lost to us. The death-glow always beautifies anything that wears the trace of beauty ere it goes back to nothingness. We do not understand the secret of this principle, yet we know that it is some law of the infinite mind." ~ Northern Advocate

While I don't subscribe to this viewpoint, I thought you'd enjoy it.

Your writing and photograph are beautiful, Ziva.

  9. Autumn's gone all too soon. A brilliant flash of color and then it's a monotone world until spring. Hunker down, Ziva!

  10. That's just wrong, but you know, I actually dreamt about a snowstorm last night. No joke. That's also a beautiful shot.

  11. I can hear the silence of your missing season.

    Sigh.

  12. Falling snow- "too pure for our world". That is absolutely a stunning statement. What beautiful words you put into this post. You make me feel quite illiterate. The photo is scary pretty, though.

  13. I haven't experienced snow in so long, that I can't quite remember it...I do not miss it!

  14. You already have snow like that! After short summer, it brings us calm long white world. Great photo!

  15. "I love autumn. I love the rain, the dark, candles and chilly mornings when the world smells like the end of an era"

I absolutely LOVE this season too. And what a beautiful photo, Ziva. I cannot wait for the snow to fall in NJ.

  16. Looks like a great place to visit. And leave. I'm a tropical guy and love 85 degrees Farenheit and humidity. The perfect winter is lows in the 50's

  17. You know, this time I have to agree with you, I could've done without snow for a few more weeks.

  18. I don't really mind the snow, as soon as I'm done mourning the autumn, I'm all for snow. ;) I hope hurricane Sandy goes easy on you!

  19. I couldn't have said it better myself!

    ReplyDelete
  20. You're kidding? Did you infiltrate my mind somehow?

  21. I honestly cannot understand people who don't like snow/winter--I would die without the extreme season changes we have. While we are far from the east coast, we have the possibility of getting the kind of snow in this picture because of hurricane Sandy--and I welcome it! (The picture is amazing, by the way.)

  22. Yeah, the snow arrived a little earlier than I had planned for, it caught me quite unprepared. Still, I like it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I hope you get some snow soon, it really is an amazing feeling to watch the first snow fall. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Me too, the seasonal changes keep me alive. I don't think I'd do well if I couldn't experience it all. I hope you get some snow!

    ReplyDelete
  25. :)
I wouldn't mind some pretty snow instead of a hurricane!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lows in the 50s? Pathetic. So far this fall our low is 15 degrees... And it's not even winter yet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd happily share my snow with you!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't suppose you want to share my hurricane?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well.... I've never experienced a hurricane, and I'm not sure I want to start now.. Be safe, LM, I really hope Sandy goes easy on you.

  30. I'll bet you don't do a lot of snorkeling in those kinds of temperatures, eh? I do have to say that I enjoy snow skiing, so the cold isn't ALL bad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, during the summer we snorkel.. Sometimes. When the ice isn't as thick....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Winter... shudder. I want my summer back.... NOW! GORGEOUS picture... you are so talented.. I have enjoyed your photos so much!

  33. Hey Ziva, this is a corker! I love the red leaves peeping from under the heavy snowfall on the tree. Bloody lovely. Your words are poetry. Thank you, Z! Indigo x

  34. Thank you, Indigo, I'm really glad you liked it. :)

  35. Aww, thanks Katherine! If I find any summer, you can have it. :)
