Craftsman
You might not know this, but our very own Michael is not just a master wordsmith with verbal diarrhea and a knack for making dirty jokes, he is also quite the craftsman. He’s built desks and trunks and boxes and lamps and children’s toys and shelving units and an awful lot of signs. The list goes on and on. When I got married in July, he sent me a wedding gift, a beautiful box that he made himself. To me, it looks slightly Asian, or maybe just Alien. It has long spindly legs which are perfectly tapered towards the bottom, and the cutest little lid. The amount of detail and the careful craftsmanship that’s gone into this box is simply amazing. It’s a work of art, and by far the most original wedding gift we received.
Thank you, Michael. I love it, it’s perfect.
And since Michael is Michael, he filled the box with little wind-up monkeys.

hand crafted gifts are the best!
ReplyDeleteThe wind-up monkey toys were meant to be your wedding gift, Ziva. I just whittled some old boards down, glued them together and used the box for shipping. But your perfectly composed and lit photograph made that old thing look downright special. Thank you, and I'm glad you like it. And the monkeys. Monkeys are awesome.
ReplyDeleteP.S. -- I'm not long-winded. Everybody else just has a short attention span.
They sure are. :)
ReplyDeleteTLDR.
ReplyDeleteDILLIGAS?
ReplyDeleteimpressive work! gotta appreciate a man good with his hands.
ReplyDeleteI might actually get married again if I could get Michael to send me some wind-up monkeys as a wedding gift. They'd go so well with my rubber chicken collection.
ReplyDeleteYou had to look that one up, didn't you?
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more!
ReplyDeleteIf you asked nicely, I'm sure he'd do it even without the wedding.
ReplyDeleteI had to look both of them up. Do I win?
ReplyDeleteFirst let me get this out of my system: Awwwwwwwwwwwww.
ReplyDeleteThat's one fine piece of art. I think Michael being Michael is a round-about way of saying he's 12-dimensional. No wonder his self-portraits all look surreal.
That is absolutely spectacular... I had no idea, and that is one of the most beautiful boxes I have ever seen, truly!
ReplyDeleteAww...now I'm all wound up.
ReplyDeleteOoh, that's pretty. You'd better keep an eye on those monkeys, though. They are their own kind of crafty.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors in this photo sooooo much! And that box is adorable.
ReplyDeleteI had to look them up, too. Because IGAS
ReplyDeletePlease, Michael! I need me some wind-up monkeys to go with my rubber chickens!
ReplyDeleteYou're always all wound up, Dufus!
ReplyDeleteIt's not that IGAS, it's that I hate being confused.
ReplyDeleteI loved that box the first time that you showed it and kind of think that you chose today's theme just so that you could show off Michael's talents one more time. He really needs to send each of us a cute box full of monkeys for participating in this challenge again.
ReplyDeleteThat photograph is truly lovely. He could use it as an advertisement for customers if he weren't giving us all of his inventory as prizes!
He's a pretty surreal guy.
ReplyDeleteHah!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! They keep getting into trouble and I keep having to save them. One of these days, I just won't help them out and let the cats play with them.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Monique!
ReplyDeleteHah, busted. I really do want to show off Michael's talents, everyone should get to admire that box. ;) He'll have to get started on making more boxes very soon if he's going to give each of us one. Luckily, I think he already has a crate full of monkeys..
ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful. And MWJ sure is talented for making it! I loved this when you first showed it to us, and I love it even more now!
ReplyDeleteIt's fantastic, isn't it? He's a talented guy, that grumpy old man.
ReplyDeleteSo true!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! And what a perfect photo of it! Now I want one too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda, it really is gorgeous, isn't it. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, that thing is fantastic. That's the product of a true craftsman.
ReplyDeleteMichael is going to be so happy you said that.
ReplyDeleteI had trouble commenting via Google Chrome. I love the photo and Michael's gift. It's an incredible piece of craftsmanship, as well as a great prompt.
ReplyDeleteI remember your first post about this and I'm still amazed by it. It's a fantastic box.
ReplyDeleteYeah, people keep telling me that..
ReplyDeleteDamn Disqus, it's a freaking black hole for comments. Anyway, I'm very glad you liked the photo, it's easy to take a good photo when you have such a pretty box to photograph.
ReplyDeleteSo many jokes, so little time.
ReplyDeleteI'm never happy about anything. But I'm slightly less unhappy. Thanks, Jamie.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take the high road here, no matter how much you try to tempt me. Thank you, Lauren.
ReplyDeleteI'm never happy, just less unhappy. Thank you, Jamie, but Ziva's photo made it look much nicer than it is.
ReplyDeleteWell, who doesn't want a nice box, I ask you?
ReplyDeleteCheryl, Alameda has a wealth of old Craftsmen homes. They are generally one level and noteworthy because of the interiors that feature some marvelous built-ins like book shelves and cabinetry. We live in a Victorian (circa 1880), and the old homes here are just amazing.
ReplyDeleteMany of my female friends are craftspeople as well. In fact, I know more about "crafts" than most of the men I know. (But that's really not saying that much!)
It is beautiful! I love such personal gifts. It beats a gift card any day.
ReplyDeleteI'm blushing here. So is my monkey.
ReplyDeleteOh, you two! Please don't go on and on. Not forever, anyway. Maybe just for a few days or so.
ReplyDeleteHuh? I was traveling on the astral plain and thought I heard somebody calling my name.
ReplyDeleteAll I need is an address, Boom Boom. BTW, I also have a collection of rubber chickens. And that's no joke.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am very, very good with my hands.
ReplyDeleteI did have to look DILIGAS up. I don't text much.
