30 Days of Photographs II: The Experiment

How can I possibly explain this in 250 words or less?

It was an experiment, you see. A bright idea one of the two of us had, I can’t remember who it was anymore, but I’m fairly sure it couldn’t have possibly been M.

“Sure,” he said, I’ll try anything once. Which is a lie, by the way, he won’t. He says he will, but he’s a liar.

And then, well, the corn field was pretty big, and the shoes wouldn’t really fit. And the ducks were chasing the beavers and the extension cord wasn’t really long enough and um, well, you can see how that would have been problematic.

Now, the mask, it was, like, so complicated! And really, who carries duct tape around wherever they go anyway?

Then M started doubting the whole thing, and well, you know how it is with the ducks and quacking and the echoing.

But the top hat really put the finishing touches on the outfit. And the bite marks were hardly noticeable from a distance. It might have needed a ribbon, or a bow or something, but M said it was fine the way it was. Well, you know how men are.

Who would have thought it would be so difficult to hold the “David” pose for so long? It seems pretty straightforward, but you’d be surprised.

Yeah.

It appears I cannot explain this in 250 words after all. I’m terribly sorry. But the photo really says it all, don’t you think?

  1. Duct tape? I don't carry it. Now as for duck tape, I've got a roll hanging round my neck at all times.

"the ducks were chasing the beavers" - am I your muse or something?

  2. I have no idea what you're talking about, but you say it so well. :) I do like the photo, though. Creepy, especially with no face behind the mask.

  3. Do you take Ambien by any chance?  :)

  4. The bite marks were hardly noticeable from a distance.  Ha!

  5. This reminds me of that episode of Doctor Who. "Are you my mummy?"

  6. I'm a little worried about all of us right now. We're all doing entirely too well so far.

This could have been your ant photo, too.

  7. I feel like I fell through the looking glass reading this.  I love the mask.  Bite marks, huh?

  8. I read this first thing in the morning and had to come back to make sure that I hadn't hallucinated the entire experience. Still think that I must have forgotten to take my meds this morning...

  9. Please throw that in the suitcase along with the whip. Thank you.

    Awesome photograph, btw.

  10. I first read this on my phone and thought I was looking at handcuffs. Now Nicky's talking about whips.

  11. That picture is a real gas, Ziva. And so are you. I understood everything you were trying to say. Scary.

  12. I had to read it twice... and I'm still not sure I understand it. But - the mask. - is awesome.  Ok. I just re-read it again. I might get it now. A little slow on the uptake.

  13. Absolutely brilliant. Another title might be "The Rorschach Experiment."

  14. Ziva,

"But the top hat really put the finishing touches on the outfit. And the bite marks were hardly noticeable from a distance."

That made me laugh out loud, for real.

    Love the photo.

  15. I don't know what I like better, the photograph -- which is compelling and creepy -- or the story, which is compelling and cryptic. I think you're a genius, Ziva, although in Finland, the world's best-educated nation, perhaps you're very average. I doubt it, though.

  16. How's duck tape any different from duct tape? Please explain so I can steal it and use it in a post at a later date.

Yes, you did inspire that line. Aren't you proud to have been a vital part of the creation of something so magnificent?

  17. Thanks, Bryan, creepy is exactly what I was going for. ;)

  18. Nope, this is just the way I am. ;)

  19. No one takes that close a look anyway... Right?

  20. Very proud, delighted in fact. Duck tape is used to stick ducks to things. I use it around the home all the time. Duct tape is almost as powerful, but it is allergenic, brings the ducks out in rashes.

  21. Yeah, I guess it could have been, I never even thought of that..

And don't worry, it'll be getting a lot worse before this challenge is over. ;)

  22. Oh yes, bite marks. All over. Stupid beavers.

  23. I think reading this in a drug-induced haze might actually help you make some sense of it.

  24.  Already packed it. And I'm on my way over, we'll be doing the David in no time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You're intrigued, aren't you?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow, you must be a mind reader, dufus. Tell me, did you like what you saw?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not even sure I get it, and I'm the one who wrote it. ;) Glad you liked the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh, um, yeah. Particularly the duct-taped ducks that were no longer biting.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, the photo itslef is pretty clear, but I guess a written Rorschach, where your mind fills in the blanks as you're reading the non-story. I would love to know what everyone thought of while reading it..

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it, Frank. :)

  30. Thank you, Meleah, I'm so glad you liked it!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh Mike, you flatter me. I'm hardly a genius. If I am, I am a very misunderstood one. But I am extremely happy that you liked this post, photo and story both.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was a good part, wasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. You use it around the home all the time.... You really have quite the nasty duck infestation, don't you? I'm curious, though, if you don't like the ducks, and tape them to things, why would you care if they break out in rashes or not? I can only assume duck tape is a special item that costs about twice as much as normal duct tape..

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let's just say that I like the ducks to be taped nicely so they are quiet and don't poop everywhere, but I don't want to catch a mutant strain of duck rash.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think you forgot to put the filter on the mask before writing that story.

The photo really does say it all.  It's a great shot - I love creepy.  Oh, and I like the story, too!

    ;-)

  36. I wish I hadn't read the comment thread. My brain just imploded!

I adore this piece and love that mask. It reminds me of some horror show I saw as a kid: this is what all the ants looked like. They were huge, probably bigger than the ribbon you'd probably have needed to cover the bite marks.

  37. OH HOW CRAZY!  AHHHHHHH!  What is funny?  My friend recently sent me a text.. "it's here, it's here!"  What was it?  A mask, just like that!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dammit! I knew there was something I forgot.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We can't have your brain imploding like that, you probably need some kind of safety gear. Like.. say, a gas mask! ;)
