30 Days of Photographs II: Power
I do not like electricity. I assume my dislike of it stems from growing up with a father who was an electrical engineer, and seeing him stick forks into the electrical sockets while telling me never to do what he does but what he says. Of course, then he never did tell me anything about electricity, which has left me with all sorts of conflicted feelings about forks and electrical sockets.
I know how to change a broken light bulb, and in a pinch I can replace a blown fuse, but ask me to touch anything metallic during the cold and dry winter months, and I will look like an idiot, trying to just barely make contact because maybe if the contact is really brief and feather light, I won’t get a shock from the static electricity.
Yeah right.
Still, electricity brings me the internet, toasts my bread in the morning and makes the little rabbit dance (don’t ask.) So what if some days it takes me 5 minutes just to work up the guts to open the door of my car, it might just be worth it.

You don't get off that easy. Make the rabbit dance? I would imagine so if you make it stick a fork in a socket. Your photo makes electricity look somewhat of a monster from some sci-fi film. I kinda like it.
ReplyDeleteOK. What my mind came up with for what makes your rabbit dance over-POWERED your photo. There WAS a photo, right?
ReplyDelete:)
Sorry, I'm with both ReformingGeek and Noname, what makes the rabbit dance? You have to tell now. :)
ReplyDeleteI've been struggling to get our little white rabbit for weeks. Stick it in the power socket did you say? I love the colours by the way.
ReplyDeleteStatic electricity does suck donkey. I just realized with this mild winter we had, it wasn't much of a problem.
ReplyDeleteIt's a small price to pay. I've been without power for a week. That sucked even more.
That tower looks odd for some reason. Different somehow. I can't put my finger on it...
The photo looks very alien. I could see that structure on Mars or something, I thought rabbits danced from batteries. You plug yours in?
ReplyDeleteGreat perspective/leading line in this shot. So sorry about your inner conflict. Tell me more about this rabbit, m'kay?
ReplyDeleteI can't say enough how much I like black and white photography. I know your post talks about NOT liking electricty but you made it look so good in your photo! Also, that thing about the rabbit, I'm going to have nightmares.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Ziva.
ReplyDeleteI love the black n white.
My father was also an electrician, and I grew up playing with electricity like some boys play with toy soldiers. I'm not afraid of it, and even think it can be quite enjoyable in the sense that it can make you feel more alive and aware. The key is not to use too much, just enough. Dr. Frankenstein learned this eventually, and so did Nikola Tesla, inventor of our modern electrical system and some really cool lightening machines. His toys have all sorts of interesting applications, especially if you're a stoner.
ReplyDeleteI like this photo, partly because it's well composed, and also because of the little balls on the lines.
I kinda like it, too, but now that I've already posted I realized I should have taken a photo of that whip everyone seems to be so afraid of. ;)
ReplyDeleteHah, yeah there was a photo. The rabbit is more fun, though, so you just keep thinking about that.
ReplyDeleteI have to tell? Says who? ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'll make your rabbit dance...
ReplyDeleteI love the photo. Love the dialogue. I grew up on a farm. I remember convincing my brother to piss on the electrical fence. yes. true story. :)
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's different because it's a Finnish tower? ;) I would hate being without electricity for a week. Hell, even a day. Or an hour.
ReplyDeleteBatteries are power, too... ;) It does look kind of alien, doesn't it? It's taken close to where M originally comes from. Must be that.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cheryl! You want to know about the rabbit? Well, it's pink.
ReplyDeleteBlack and white makes everything look good, doesn't it? I've really had to tell myself that I cannot post only black and white photos for 30 days in a row. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Meleah! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, it can make you feel alive and aware right up until you're dead and very unaware. ;) Glad you liked the photo, even though there's clearly something very wrong with your head, what with this unhealthy fascination with electricity..
ReplyDeleteHaha, I like you! And really, he probably deserved it, didn't he? ;)
ReplyDeleteSure you can!

Most probably. Everything is bigger here. I took a similar photo while walking to the store the other day. Maybe I'll get to use it and we can compare and contrast.
ReplyDeleteYes, everything is definitely bigger in America. Maybe you could use it for Lines. ;)
ReplyDeleteNow see, I have to ask. Does your pink rabbit "dance," or is it more of a "vibration"?
ReplyDeleteLove this photo - I almost took one of some power lines just down the street from my house. My dad was an electrical contractor and I grew up playing with wires - even helped wire my first home. Hate getting shocked, though!
ReplyDeleteClearly my dad was doing something wrong when I didn't grow up to love electricity. ;)
ReplyDeleteOf course you have to ask, you wouldn't be a very good reader and commenter if you didn't, I completely agree. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy brother once wired two forks, stuck them into opposite ends of a pickle and plugged it in. It looked nuclear and stank like hell. But it was really cool. Obviously your father never showed you that little trick. :-)
ReplyDeleteAh electricity. I blew up a number of things when I was growing up. Most of of them my parents never found out about, except for the "Chandelier Incident", which was kind of impossible to cover up.
ReplyDeleteNice tower of power! Here (in most parts of North America), our power towers look like menacing monsters of mega-watts. I particularly like that your engineers had the foresight in adding the "Holiday (Christmas) Lights", eliminating all of those those exhausting up-and-down-the-ladder trips.
ReplyDelete;-)
I work on computers... near power all the time. But you know what? Power scares ME. I won't change a light fixture in the ceiling, even when I know the power in the house is shut down. I'm right there with you.
ReplyDeleteNo, I call that a "healthy fear!"
ReplyDeleteUm, no, he didn't. And I would have probably ran away from home had he done it.
ReplyDeleteThe Chandelier Incident? Do I want to know? ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, we definitely know how to plan ahead in Finland. ;)
ReplyDeletePower SHOULD scare you, it's dangerous and uncontrollable and it hurts when you come in contact with it. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteProbably. It's good story :)
ReplyDeleteTell me! Tell me!
