Thirty Days of Photographs: A Winter Picture

Winter for me means snow. Lots and lots of snow. I mean, snow like you wouldn’t believe it. So for this picture I went out and looked for snow. I looked everywhere; under the bushes in the yard, behind the dumpster, on the roof, under the bed, behind the TV. The closest I came to finding snow was in the freezer, but when I took it out, it melted.

Realizing that snow wouldn’t work, I tried Christmas next. But when I asked M to go out and get me a Christmas tree, he thought I’d gone crazy and tried to have me committed. So yeah, that didn’t work either.

Every idea I had seemed to melt away in the heat and I started to long for the cold of winter. And it hit me; I’ve been looking forward to winter for a long time already. Not because I like the snow or the cold, but because for the first time in ages I’m actually prepared for it. I haven’t had a decent pair of winter boots in years and the only thing keeping my frostbitten toes attached to my feet has been sheer determination. That, and a very good seamstress. This year will be different, though. Just as the weather turned warmer last winter, I finally took the bull by the horns and forked up an insane amount of money for these, the most awesome of winter boots. They’re not only pretty to look at, but they’re also guaranteed to keep my feet warm in -30 degree weather. And for the first time since I was a child, I’m excited about winter.

Bring it on!

Please don’t remind me of this post when I’m whining about winter and the cold in a couple of months.

  1. I love the boots!  Those are darling and will keep your pretty feet nice and warm all winter.  For that matter, in the Summer, you could wear them with your Daisy Dukes and turn some heads.  Those are very feminine even without a high heel.  Who knew that could be done?  Winters coming, Ziva, and sooner than I want to see it.  But we don't get snow here.  Just 67 and partly cloudy.

  2. Those are the sexiest winter boots I've ever seen. I think Pochahontas -- the super-sexy Disney Pochahontas, not the probably ugly real-life Pocahontas -- could wear those. I also think I faintly recall you and Nicky discussing these boots some time ago. Something about having her order and ship them to you, and you reimbursing her. Perhaps I have that wrong.  Uh, congratulations on your new boots, and even though they were expensive, you'll save money on having your toes sewn back on, so it all works out in the end.

  3. But I thought you liked winter??  If I were still living in Canada, I would definitely get a pair of those boots.  Mind you, when I was much younger, I used to wear running shoes most of the time in winter;  they were blue suede and would dye my feet, giving my grandparents heart attacks when I took them (and my wet socks) off.

I miss winter - particularly now in this heat.

  4. I have high hopes for those boots, but they definitely are not meant as summer wear. I'm not sure I could live in a place with no snow. I know I bitch about the snow and the cold, but I really do love it. 67 and partly cloudy is just too depressing.

  5. I could be Pochahontas. Totally. I have the hair and the boots, what more do I need?

I did ask someone to help me buy these from Canada or America, but I ended up buying them from an English website myself. Cost me an arm and a few of those toes, too.

  6. Of course I like winter, I find it beautiful. But I don't look forward to it, because whenever I think of winter I think of getting stuck in the snow with the car, or freezing my fingers off while trying to walk on ice without falling and breaking a leg. There was a time when I wore really crappy shoes all winter long, but I swear, winters have become colder since then. It can't possibly be because I'm getting old.

  7. Those are very cute for being a pair of "practical" boots. I've always found the cuter my boots were, the colder my feet were. I'm glad you have a reason to look forward to winter now, especially since it's only, what? One week away?

  8. You could work those boots, Ziva!

  9. Love the boots.  I finally got a pair of very warm boots a few years ago and they made all the difference for my comfort level when we sat at hockey games--you CAN'T enjoy yourself when you're thinking about having to reattach the toes that have fallen off.

Yesterday when the temps dipped into the 60s, I sobbed hysterically--with happiness.  This proved that God still DOES exist and He IS watching over me--and that winter WILL come sooner rather than later.  I'm with you and don't mind winter at all--I couldn't be happy anywhere that didn't have four seasons.  Besides, the cold just helps keep me better preserved than heat does.  ;)

  10. I hate winter. But I love those boots. Did I mention I hate winter?

  11. For years my friends and I had a Christmas tradition in which we'd go outside in the snow in our bare feet. Now, however, I get cold just looking out the window at snow. Oddly enough, however, I still wouldn't want to live somewhere that didn't have some kind of winter season. Six weeks of winter would be perfect. Also six weeks of summer. The rest of the year can be divided between spring and autumn. Mostly autumn.

And while men are stereotypically credited with having absolutely no fashion sense, I can say with confidence that your new boots are definitely boots.

  14. It's getting closer every day, by my estimates it should be bere by Friday. But at least I'll have my beautiful boots. No more cold feet for me. M will also be happy to hear that.

  15. And I will be, all winter long.

  16. Ha, that's hysterical; the cold keeps you better preserves than the heat. I've never looked at it like that, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. Suddenly I'm very happy about living in Finland.

  17. Six weeks of winter really would be perfect. What we get is closer to six months than to six weeks, but then we do get to enjoy three or four days of beautiful summer, so it's totally worth it. I wouldn't go stand in the snow in my bare feet unless someone paid me to do it.

  18. No, I got a lot of work still in Australia and stuff. I'll be back in a few months.

  19. Whenever I use the 'better preserved' line to any 'young 'un'--like you--I feel I MUST give credit where it is due.  The first time I heard this was from the character Rhoda in the old Mary Tyler Moore Show--she said THAT was the reason why she moved to Minneapolis from New York.  Of course, practically no one even remembers who Mary Tyler Moore is/was and 'Rhoda' just causes people to stare blankly at me.  But I feel the need to NOT take credit for the quote...  (People don't understand that Finnish mothers are as good, if not better, than Jewish mothers at instilling guilt in their children.  ;D)

  20. Hah, I know the feeling! And it's a great quote.

  21. Liar. You always say you'll be back in a few months and then you change your mind and come back in just a couple of weeks for a surprise visit before anyone has had any time to prepare for you,

  22. That wasn't me. It's my idiot sisters Spring and Summer who turn into cold bitches when they can't make up their minds.

  23. F*cking Summer. I always liked Autumn best. No offense, Winter.
