The Goldfish Chronicles

Someone once asked me why I named my blog Ziva’s Inferno. I told them it was because The Goldfish Chronicles was already taken. Truth be told, I spent years and years thinking about what to name my blog. Years.

I thought about naming my blog Steve, but someone pointed out to me that my car is already called Steve, as well as my external hard drive… And so are various other miscellaneous objects in my home, except for my stuffed Snoopy which is called Snoopy and my huge stuffed tiger which is called Tiger. I won’t go into how it all started, but needless to say, naming everything Steve can make for very confusing conversations.

On the phone with guy from the car shop:

Guy: Dave’s Car Repair.
Z: Oh I’m so glad you answered; I’m having problems with Steve.
Guy: Umm.. Okay?
Z: He’s making these funny noises.
Guy: Ummm….
Z: When I step on it he makes this high pitched squealing noise and it’s driving me insane.
Guy: Ummmmm…
Z: You think you could fix it? My dad said it’s probably the pipes, but I’m not sure. Every time I take him for a ride it’s getting worse.
Guy: Umm.. Look lady, are you sure you called the right number?

And that’s why this blog isn’t called Steve. And I now realize that this isn’t at all the story of why I named my blog Ziva’s Inferno, but rather the story of why I didn’t name my blog Steve. But I guess that’s as good a story as any.

So, why isn’t your blog called Steve? *

  1. You're scaring me, Ziva David.

I'm glad your blog isn't named Steve. I would never have clicked on it. :)

  4. I like Steve as well as the next girl. But I haven't named anything Steve, not my cat, not my dog, not even one of my gold fish. I do have a cousin named Steve, and an old boyfriend had a son named Steve, and one of my favorite actors of all times was named Steve (McQueen). I do not even have a fish named Steve and that's strange. I have fish named Oscar, Bob, Cleotis, Ralph, Larry, Mickey, Anthony (sometimes called Tony), Ramon, Jorge, Marcelo, Dick, Bruce, Jason, Frank, Leo and Willie. But not a Steve in the bunch.

  5. I find that I don't name anything in my life--other than my kids and cat. (The Husband already came with a name when we first met.) I don't think I would be allowed to name anything Steve, as one of our nephews goes by that name. And The Husband's best friend from the Navy, who married my best friend from school, is named Steve. And I have a cousin named Steve. And The Husband works with a Steve. Our neighbor is Steve. Hmmm, I didn't know that Steve was such a popular name. Good thing I didn't name MY blog Steve.

  6. A blog named Steve is like a boy named Sue. With that said, I love the name Ziva's Inferno. Never thought about naming my car. Just use the nickname "gas guzzler." Oh, sorry, I meant the oil companies.

  7. Steve's a terrible name for a blog. It's also a terrible name for a guy. Stevie's a cool name for a girl though.

I decided not to name my blog Steve because it's hard to spell what with having two Es and the very unusual consonant V. Then I was going to name it Mike, but I said it a hundred times out loud, got desperately bored, and almost killed myself in despair. In the end, I opted for Emma, which is pleasant, youthful sounding, not at all frightening, and looks adorable in a pinafore. Thank you for reading Emma, Ziva. Or pretending to read it. Either way, Emma appreciates the attention.

  9. Oh Ziva, you make me laugh. The only thing I have ever named "Steve" was a giant pimple that just wouldn't go away!

  11. Sorry, no cookies today. But I did make scones, you're very welcome to have one.

  12. In that case I'm also very glad my blog isn't name Steve. Things would be very boring if it were only me and Steve here.

  13. Next time one of your fish has a baby you should really name it Steve, it would make me very happy. Although, your fish seem to be a very male bunch, judging by the names...

  14. Huh.. Stevie's Inferno.. I like it.

  15. Don't you just hate those suckers? They're probably all called Steve and come from the evil land of pimples.

  16. You're welcome, Mike, Emma is wonderful and I'm happy to read it. And now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to say "Steve" a hundred times and see what happens.

  17. Hehe, I didn't mean to name my car either, it just happened. I blame my sister. Also, I figured that the one thing in my life that eats up every single penny that I make really should have its own name.

  18. Imagine how confusing it would be if we all named our blogs Steve. I actually don't know a single person called Steve. Mostly because where I live most guys are called Niko or Mikko or Pekka or Ville or Kalle or Alexander or Erik or Emil or.. well you get the point.

  19. Actually, those were just the boy names. The girls are Golda, Abbey Rose, Annabelle Lee, Georgina, Lolita, Carmen, Maria, Dawn, Delilah,, Marjorie, Lucretia, Wanda, Keeana, Winifred, Barbara, Hortense,Evelyn, Fern, Molly, Ida, Gertie, Ursula, Mattie, and Rhoda.

  20. Be careful. Once you feed me I'll never go away. ;)

  21. That's absolutely fine with me! Just don't eat all the scones, they're my lunch for tomorrow..

  22. I amaze me too. My cousin doesn't understand how I can tell all my fish apart. I never had trouble telling my kids apart either.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Your name is NOT Steve. But I love you anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Don't do it, Ziva! Your life's at risk!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can't name anything Steve, because one of the oldest people I know is named Steve. That could get cruelly confusing for him in a hurry.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You know, it could also get really funny, I'm just saying. ;) Thanks for stopping by!

None of this makes sense even if you translate it on Google. Personally, I think you were both raised by monkeys, and this your secret language.

  30. monkeys.. yeah.. that's what raised us... 0_o

  31. Mike, you’re absolutely right. I ran our comments through Google Translate and they didn’t make any sense at all. So, for your convenience I’ve tidied up our language and spelling a little, now it should make a little more sense to you.

Muschu: Steve, steve, steve, steve, steve... Har du sett Itse ilkimys (movie: Despicable Me) redan? Den är mycket rolig :) Steve är med i den!

Och där finns en mycket fluffig enhörning i den!! Men den har bara en liten roll...

Jag behöver något nytt att läsa.. Skriv något... Skriv skriv skriv skriv..

(Random quote from Disney’s The Jungle Book.)

Imorgon. Eller se på Djungelboken. "Hitta på något!"

    You’re welcome, Mike.

  32. Shhhh! Don't tell him anything!!

  33. I didn't name my blog Steve because it's too tedious, explaining whether the formal name should be spelled Steven or Stephen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That, is just about the best answer ever.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah, and then some bastard comes along wanting to call himself Stefan or something other ridiculous thing.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Over here, there are even some people who call themselves Staffan. Enough, I say!
