I accept cash, PayPal, gift certificates, goats, statues raised in my honor, poems, praise, and Johnny Depp

I've found myself ignoring this blog more and more. It hasn't been a conscious decision. In fact, when I posted my photos for the April challenge, I promised myself I would blog more often. Somehow, though, the entire month went by without as much as a word written, and before I knew it, it was time to post the May photos. This month, I refuse to let that happen.

The problem is, though, that I don't have much to say these days. It must be old age catching up with me. It's my birthday today*. I'm 173 years old. I think. Last time I celebrated my birthday I was 27, but it feels like an awful many years have passed since then. I told M I wanted adventure for my birthday, so he got me a book about the gay culture in Sweden in the 1980's.

I love him.

But despair not, there are not only awesome books in my future, M and I also have some amazing adventure coming up. See, we have a little bit of a trip planned later this month, so if you're really lucky (or just really unlucky, depending on how you feel about shy Finns avoiding eye contact while talking to you), M and I might show up in a city near you.

Now, since I don't have much to say, I'm going to show you some photos instead.

I've done a lot of baking the past month. This was M's birthday cake.

Hearts in the night.

Remember mom's tiny little itty bitty super cute puppy? This is her now.

Finally, summer...

Beautiful sister, I love you.

I told you, a LOT of baking.

My mom brought me lilacs, and this little fellow had tagged along.

  1. I was about to get all excited about you showing up in a city near me and then I realized you wrote "M" and you. Doesn't he have other, more important things to do in Finland? Like sign divorce papers and deposit a very substantial settlement into your account? :-)

    Happy birthday, my love!

  2. Beautiful pictures as always. Both those cakes look delicious. The one with the fruit actually looks healthy. Much better than that rum cake I attempted to make for you and drank all the rum. Sorry. So is that 173 in Finn years? Hell, you aren't even 30 yet my dear. I wish I was 28 again. It was the end of the 70s. It was the best of times, it was the wurst of times... (I've always liked sausages) Well, you had to be there. Any way, my friend, have a very happy birthday and I hope you have many more...and that I'm around to help you celebrate them.

  5. Even though it is your birthday, if I had a Johnny Depp to give, I wouldn't. Sorry. You'll have to come and get him...

  6. Oh my, my, on the baking. I want some of that cake. Both cakes.

Oops. Cat is trying to eat that critter on the lilacs and Evil Twin just said your sister is prettier than you. I put her back in the closet. Sigh.

I think you ought to open your own bakery. Maybe your sister could
help you -- when she's not standing around on the dock pensively waiting for the ship to return from sea with her one true love.

The former puppy could also help. You could hitch her to a delivery cart and sell pies and cakes all over Turku. Although it might cost you more to feed her than you can make. That's a really big dog. I could ride that dog to work.

Anyway, I'm glad you're doing some traveling. If you go to Iceland, I recommend visiting Reykjavík, which was discovered by the bloody Vikings and is often referred to as the Bay of Smokes, probably because it's going to get obliterated by Eyjafjallajökull pretty soon.

Or you could come to Colorado. We have cowboys here if that makes it more appealing to you.

Or to M. Who am I to judge?

  8. Well happy birthday!
Brilliant photos, and perfectly summery too. God those cakes look good. Especially the second one. Even the caterpillar looks tasty in all his green glory.

  9. Well for gawd sakes, lemme know if you are in Sacramento.

Oh, and Johnny Depp, you'd have to pry him away from my cold, dead hands.

  10. Happy birthday Z!
Ya, I've been ignoring my blog lately too. Let's make a deal, you remind me to write and I will remind you. I just don't know who will remind me to remind you.

  12. M is proving surprisingly stubborn. It's as if he actually wants to be married to me! Such a weird guy. But one day, gorgeous, it'll be you and me.

  13. Thank you so much, my dear friend. If you ever find yourself in Finland, I'll bake you so many rum cakes, you'll be drunk til the end of time. We'll have a blast. ;)

  14. Thank you so much, Linda! We'll definitely have to stop by for a drink. ;)

  15. Thanks, Dani, they really were pretty awesome. ;)

  16. Ohh, if you had Johnny Depp, I'd already be there.

  17. My sister is prettier than I am? That's a horrible thing to say to someone, even if it's true. Evil Twin better sleep with one eye open tonight.

  18. It's considered extremely rude to come over for cake and then end up eating the caterpillars.

  19. Oh, that won't be a problem. ;)

  20. Okay, it's a deal! So... consider this me reminding you to write. Now it's your turn to remind me.

  21. Thank you, Meleah! I'd bake you a cake anytime.

  22. Dammit. Now I have to return the book. I'll just send you a gift card.

    The lilacs. HOLY cow.... amazing!

  23. You had me at Johnny Depp and if I'm honest you had me at the cake too! The lilacs are lovely and I think the little guy adds something.

  24. I agree. In fact, I think that little green guys add something to every photo.
