30 Days of Photographs III: Calm

Day 13 of 30 Days of Photographs III. I'm extremely impressed by how many of you post a photo every single day. It really is amazing to see the desperation creativity at work. That said, we welcome with open arms any and all participants, whether you post every day, or just once or twice. Come on, post a photo, will you? You'll make me a very happy woman. Michael, on the other hand, will just bitch about having to write "awesome photo" too many times. Add the link to your post at the bottom of the page, and check out the other photos while you're at it.

Calm

Water. It calms my soul, heals my spirit. And luckily for me, I live in the land of a thousand lakes. Not so lucky for me, I was late taking this photo and ended up just taking a photo of the river running through Turku instead of one the beautiful lakes. But you get the point, right?

  1. It's said that God lives in the mountains, and maybe He does -- they are grand. But it's also said that when He formed the world, His spirit moved upon the face of the waters. That's where I believe His spirit still lives, and where my soul longs to be.

Like you, I find water healing and calming, Ziva. Powerfully so. And whether it's a river or lake, this is a beautifully lit, well-composed and evocative photo that has me searching the map for the nearest harbor.

  3. Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
    Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hills.

  4. Sitting near the water's edge as the day comes to a close or slowly awakens soothes my soul. Lovely photo, Ziva.

  6. I do get your point. Water at night is one of my favourite things. Cheese on toast at night is another. The reflections are amazing, lovely shot.

  7. You really are quite the photographer, aren't you? I want to be, but just don't have the time to compose photographs properly. Fortunately for me, words just happen.

I love this photo, Ziva. From the glow in the sky to the perfect reflections in the water, everything works beautifully.

I am a water person, too. My goal is to live on the ocean shore and to spend my days staring at it.

  8. Just beautiful! I'm glad that you took the photo in Turku - sharing your town with us is wonderful! I think that the cloudy sky reflected in the water is my favorite aspect of this composition.

  9. We have a perfectly good harbor in Turku. You ought to come visit some time. I think it might be good for your soul. :)

  12. You just had to talk about cheese, didn't you... Now I have to go sit by the water again.

  13. I'm no photographer, Jamie, I just have a good camera... But thank you for the kind words. ;) I can't say words come quite as easily for me as they do for you, but hey, at least they come in several different languages, that's got to count for something, right?

I hope you achieve your goal and spend all your days staring at the ocean and writing philosophy books. And picking up after Toys R Us explosions..

  14. I find bodies of water calming. This photo has a special dignity. Perfect in black and white.

  15. Thank you, LM! The water really is magical, isn't it, reflecting the sky above it, yet hiding under the surface lies such great mystery..

  16. For some reason I always love water photos in black and white. I guess it's because the black makes water look dangerous and enticing. ;)

  17. Very nice and a bit scary. Evil Twin sees something lurking in that water.

  18. I think it's Evil Twin lurking in the water...

  19. Being landlocked is intolerable, isn't it?

  20. This is so moody and artistic! I quite love it!

  24. I am sure one of the many reasons so many Finns came here to the UP of Michigan was because of our lakes--especially Lake Superior. When the Lake is totally calm--which doesn't happen all that often--it is a soothing balm to the soul. I couldn't live too far from the water, either. I love being near the Lake, even if I don't go IN or ON the water, EVER. :)

I've been impressed, as always, with all of the photos I've seen during this challenge. Beautiful, beautiful. That is why I haven't posted any pics of my own and am 'participating' in my own, kind of unique way: with the written word and 'borrowed' photos from others. ;)

  25. Okay, that didn't post the way I wanted it to. Usually whenever I comment, my user name is 'chrkos.' I'll have to figure out what I did wrong. And I've always thought I had a handle on this technology stuff... ;D

  26. I love this. And I particularly love the light from the town reflecting on the clouds.

  27. I share your love of water. As a child in West Texas where there is no water, I would spend hours sunning on the red, muddy banks of the Red River. Not pleasant at all, but it was water. I now live on a lake. East Texas does not satisfy my soul, but at least I have my water. Nothing like watching sunrises and sunsets on the lake. Thanks for a photo which makes me appreciate my current surroundings.

  30. Thank you, Ziva. Don't be surprised if I show up on your doorstep one evening smelling of iodine and ozone.

  31. You're welcome. And Mike? You've got to find a way to get back to the ocean again.

  32. Ziva, this is an amazing photo. You absolutely captured the calmness.

  33. Midnight, it's when the magic happens.

  34. Oh Malisa, I'm glad you're living by the water now. I really couldn't imagine living in a place without water.

  35. Oh, I'll make sure to stop by tomorrow to check out your posts, I had no idea you were participating in your own way. :)

I do believe you're right about the UP, I think we Finns gravitate towards water, and once we've found it, we don't want to leave. You really never get in or on the water?
