30 Days of Writing: They Played My Song

My song doesn’t get played a lot. Hardly ever, actually. In some parts of the world, you will hear it sung around Christmas time, but it wasn’t meant to be a Christmas carol. Not originally.

To tell you the truth, I think it was composed for me, because (unlike cheese,) I love it. In my mind, there are no words attached to this song. The melody speaks to me on a fundamental level. When I hear it I can close my eyes and feel the harmonies on my skin. They’re feather-light, and they tickle a little. They remind me of fragrant summer nights when the sun never sets, an orange sky and laughter around a campfire. They’re all the colors of autumn, brilliant leaves falling to the ground and the smell of rain in the air. They’re the cold of new snow and the warmth of the sun in May.

I recorded a version of this song about a year ago. I posted it here on the blog, and even though I promised myself I wouldn’t dip into the archives for this challenge, I couldn’t help myself. Because they never play my song, I always have to play it myself.

  1. That's a winner, Ziva. And you are so talented...known now for more than just your whip. Very nice.

  3. Ah, so soothing and beautiful.  I enjoy hearing it outside of the Christmas season.

  4. Oh wow, I did NOT expect that!  I thought it would be some silly xmas song spoof.  But instead, it is something serious and gorgeous!!! What a neat surprise!

  5. That was just beautiful. You are so talented!! Your melodies on that version were beautifully described in  our post.
This was one of the first songs that I managed to master on the guitar when I learned to fingerpick. It remains a favorite even though I haven't played in about 20 years.

  7. That is so lovely, I'm not even going to make fun of you in your comments section for "dipping into your archives". Beautiful, Lemmikki. 250 points. :-)

  8. That was totally lovely. I got chills. Greensleeves is one of my favorites too and you played it so well.

  9. I've always loved that song.   It was the first (and only) song I ever learned to play on a guitar.   Lovely...
(And I dipped into the archives today, too, but mine isn't nearly as appropriate to the prompt.)  *hangs head in shame*

  11. Thanks, dufus. Playing the piano is almost as much fun as swinging the whip. ;)

  12. Thanks UP, I'm really glad you liked it. :)

  13. Thank you Reffie. It's weird, but up until last year, I had no idea it was also a Christas carol, it's not associated with Christmas over here. :)

  14. Haha, I'm very happy you actually clicked "play" even though you thought it would just be a silly joke. ;)

  15. Thank you so much, LM, I'm really glad you liked it. It seems to be a popular song to play on the guitar, I'm sure you played it beautifully. You'd probably still play it beautifully, if you only tried. ;)

  16. Thank you, you're too kind. :)

  17. Thank you, my wonderful Nicky, but don't you think it would have been worth just a little bit more than 250 measly points? Like 1.000.000 points. ;)

  18. I'm glad you liked it, Leeuna, I love playing that song.  :)

  19. It really is a wonderful song, isn't it. And I'm sure your archive-dipping was just as appropriate to the prompt as mine was, I'll be right over to check it out. ;)

  20. You know, you and Mike said it so well. Your individual posts express exactly how I feel about music. Maybe that's why I didn't post anything today. You said it for me.

I love your version of Greensleeves.

  21. You know what? Since it's your birthday, I'm going to give you an extra 500 points. And because I believe in karma and rewarding generosity, I'm going to award myself 500 points too. :-)

  22. I don't buy that, I think you would've had a lot to say about music. Perhaps too much to put into words. ;) Perhaps next time you should pick up your guitar and play for us instead.

  23. Yay, birthday points!!! Those are the best, because they're automatically worth twice as much. Thank you, gorgeous, you totally deserved those karma points, too.

  24. Ziva, I love that song!  And I love how you play it.  It's hauntingly beautiful!  Marvelous!

  25. Remember that song, "Rain" I sent you?  You interpretation of, "Greenlseves" reminds me very much of Suzanne Ciani's style.  Very uniquely artistic - you have a gift!

  26. I have to return your "Holy crap!" comment to you.  I made a half-hearted attempt at piano when I was in high school but dropped it after a month or two.  Hearing you makes me wish I hadn't.  That was freakin awesome!

  27. Aww thanks! It's never too late, you know. ;)

  28. Oh yes, I remember it very well. I wanted to learn how to play it, but I was never able to find the sheet music.. It was a beautiful piece of music, and I am very flattered by the comparison. :)

  29. Lovely!  I had a small organ with numbered keys which corresponded to numbered notes in music books.  I guess you would call it "playing by number".  Anyway I believe this was one of the songs I played.  I love your version.

  30. There's a strong possibility that I may do that cause I'm already running out of words.

  31. I knew it was going to be Greenesleeves!  It's one of my favorites too!  I even learned to play it on the flute.  (Little known fact, I play the flute.)  Beautiful choice!

  32. you are so incredibly talented. I am in awe of you.

  33.  Agree with that description. However I am concerned about the cheese dislike, is there anything we can do to address that? I have some Saint Agur that I've been saving for a melancholic moment but if you like, I'll post it to Finland.

  34. Thank you, Meleah. To tell you the truth, though, I'm just faking it and chose a really simple song. ;)

  35.  Thanks Linda! I used to play by numbers, too, but then the numbers wore off and I actually had to learn how to read sheet music. What a hassle.

  36. If you're going to mail me anything, it better be chocolate and not cheese or I will never talk to you again. Chocolate can be melancholic, too, you know..
